On these Ford systems the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) uses a multi pole stepper motor to finely control fuel metering, sending sequential control pulses through the Control 1 winding and monitoring the circuit continuity and back EMF feedback. DTC P116A sets when the PCM detects an open circuit, no pulse current or feedback, in the Control 1 winding for longer than the allowable timeout during fuel pressure or metering adjustments.
